try getting it straitened ,and ask a professional.
grow it out long to where they lay down on your head but not super long cause that is nasty. also you can try to straighten your hair (even though it will not take out all the curl) then have it cut short.
I have thick curly hair too, I like it long, it looks good kinda like a lion's mane.
Whats wrong with just letting it be natural? You may just need to let it grow longer to look good! My husband used to look like a lion, with all of his long curls and beard! He is a hottie! He used to spend so long trying to straighten it and comb it down and it just looked fuzzy. Finally a hairdresser talked him into letting it grow longer and poof, looked great! If you are a person in the twenties, a bit of an afro could be hip. If you are over thirty or feel like being conservative, keep it curly and real short, maybe an inch or so. I like guys with thick curly hair, I am going by how my husband has worn his.
